The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has joined a growing chorus of condemnation against the military coup in Honduras that took place on Sunday, June 28. U.S. NGOs and faith-based groups, including USLEAP, have also issued a statement opposing the coup, as has the AFL-CIO. Coup leaders are increasingly isolated by the international community. SEIU has also issued a statement opposing the coup.
UPDATE: July 2, Yesterday the Honduran Congress suspended civil liberties, including freedom of association, in a move that escalates the conflict and increases the risk of more violence. Among others, the Washington Office on Latin America has denounced the suspension. WOLA has also issued an excellent background piece, Behind the Honduran Coup, especially important given the poor U.S. media coverage of the coup. Regular updates on the coup are being issued by Rights Action.
Three major Honduran union organizations have expressed their strong support for democratically-elected President Manuel Zelaya, who was forced into exile by the Honduran military.
The ITUC reports that Honduran unions have expressed concerns about repression and have called for an indefinite general strike. Civil rights groups in Honduras have asked the international community to condemn the coup, which has been denounced by all governments in the region, including the Obama Administration.
Suggested Action: Calls to members of Congress expressing opposition to the coup, a suspension of military aid, and support for the immediate reinstatement of President Zelaya are requested.
